Gerlingen city

Welcome to Gerlingen
The city of Gerlingen is located northwest of Stuttgart, bordering Ditzingen, Weilimdorf and Leonberg, and is the southernmost municipality in the Ludwigsburg district.
Gerlingen is a city characterized by a strongly above-average number of high-income households. Reasons for this are the proximity to Stuttgart, Leonberg as well as Sindelfingen/Böblingen, the easy access by train and (night-) buses to the state capital, the proximity to the freeways A 81 and A 8, the good overall economic situation, the visually very appealing city center, the school and landscape association as well as the extraordinarily desirable residential location on a hillside with vantage points (panorama road) and simultaneous proximity to the Stuttgart Forest and its lakes.

History
The first record of Gerlingen is found in a document of the Lorsch monastery from the year 797. Gerlingen can therefore look back on a history of over a thousand years. Until 1945 it was the story of a village, then due to the events after the war and the further development the number of inhabitants increased from 4,000 at that time to about 19,200 today.

A new element in the population structure of Gerlingen was brought by the 2000 displaced Hungarian-Germans, mainly from the village of Zsámbék near Budapest, who found a new home in Gerlingen in 1946. They and their descendants have become an important, indispensable part of our population.

The expellees or their descendants, supported by the city, consciously cultivate their historical cultural heritage. The Hungarian-German Museum of Local History, housed in the City Museum, is an example of this. Gerlingen has been the sponsor of the LDU (Landsmannschaft der Deutschen aus Ungarn) since 1969.

Until 1942, the Solitude Castle with a considerable amount of forest also belonged to the territory of Gerlingen.

On June 30, 1958 Gerlingen became a city by decision of the state government. The number of inhabitants (10,500 at that time), the settlement structure and the high cultural and economic status of the town justified this decision. Gerlingen's upward development was by no means complete. Rather, it only really began in the years that followed. New settlements were built around the former village.

The center of the town was given a new, urban look with the town hall, indoor swimming pool and office buildings. This was preceded by an urban planning competition to design the city center. This has since been accepted by the population. This is evident, for example, at the market on Saturday mornings and at the annual street festival. The new space-creating squares also have their appeal.

Today, Gerlingen is home to numerous companies. In addition to many medium-sized businesses, large world-class companies have also found a home in Gerlingen.

Gerlingen has been twinned with the French town of Vesoul since 1964. Since 1987 there has been a partnership with the Hungarian town of Tata, and since 1988 with the northern English town of Seaham.

The young town does not deny its village past, it rather takes care of it with love. Take your time and go on the historical traces of Gerlingen.
